Design with Permanent Formwork

Overview

Permanent formwork is a stay-in-place construction system that acts as both the mould for poured concrete and a permanent component of the completed structure. Unlike traditional temporary formwork that is removed after curing, permanent formwork remains in place to provide structural, durability, aesthetic and construction benefits. Permanent formwork is commonly used in retaining walls, basement walls and commercial developments, where it offers a durable and cost-effective alternative to conventional formwork methods. When specified correctly, permanent formwork can enhance design flexibility, accelerate project delivery and contribute to long-term asset performance while complying with relevant structural, durability and regulatory requirements.

Recognise and differentiate the various types of permanent formwork walling systems available for residential, commercial, civil and infrastructure applications.

2. Evaluate Design and Construction Benefits

Assess the productivity, safety, cost, durability and design advantages offered by permanent formwork solutions compared with conventional formwork methods.

3. Select Appropriate Applications

Determine suitable project applications for permanent formwork systems based on structural requirements, buildability, site constraints and asset performance objectives.

4. Understand Compliance and Specification Requirements

Interpret the key design, engineering and regulatory requirements governing the specification and installation of permanent formwork systems in Australia.

National Standard of Competency

This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects 2021:

• PC 28 Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project.

• PC 33 Understand how relevant building codes, standards and planning controls apply across architectural practice, including climate change implications, the principles of fire safety and barriers to universal access.

• PC 39 Understand how the integration of material selection, structural and construction systems impacts on design outcomes.

Andrew Hayhoe is an experienced Account Manager with a strong background in the construction and building products industry, specialising in the delivery of innovative construction solutions to engineers, architects, contractors and developers. Based in Queensland, Andrew works closely with industry stakeholders to provide technical guidance, project support and specification assistance across a range of commercial, civil and infrastructure projects.
