Interior Acoustics in Education Facilities

Overview

Open-plan educational environments are challenging from a design perspective, balancing needs of teachers and students and in providing speech privacy whilst controlling noise. Selecting material for acoustic absorption must also be balanced with other considerations such as colour fastness, sustainability and fire compliancy. Learn about speech, its perception and a brief look at how sound behaves in a space, as well as how design of spaces has an impact on human speech and its perception. Understand how absorbent material effects sound, how much is needed and if the placement of material makes a difference.

1. WHAT IS SOUND & HOW DOES IT WORK - speech and its perception. Brief look at how sound behaves in a space and how design of spaces has an impact on human speech and its perception.
2. ABSORPTION OF SOUND - How does absorbent material effect sound, how much is needed and does the placement of material make a difference?

National Standard of Competency
This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects 2021:
• PC 28 Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project.
• PC 33 Understand how relevant building codes, standards and planning controls apply across architectural practice, including climate change implications, the principles of fire safety and barriers to universal access.
• PC 39 Understand how the integration of material selection, structural and construction systems impacts on design outcomes.

Presenter
Rusty is a Construction Industry professional with over 30 years of experience. He has Tertiary Construction qualifications, practical experience gained from being a registered Unrestricted General Builder and extensive presentation experience from countless presentations to construction industry professionals across Australia and New Zealand.
