Overview

Livable Housing Design is becoming an increasingly important part of residential construction in Australia, particularly with the introduction of NCC 2022 Livable Housing Design requirements. These standards aim to create homes that are safer, more accessible, and adaptable for people of all ages and mobility levels.
A key feature of Livable Housing Design is the requirement for step-free and zero-threshold transitions, which influence the design of bathrooms and external-to-internal access points. While these features improve accessibility, they also create challenges in managing water and maintaining effective drainage.
In bathrooms, step-free showers and level floor transitions require careful consideration of floor gradients, drainage placement, and water containment to ensure safe and functional spaces.
Similarly, zero-threshold doorways between outdoor and indoor areas require well-designed drainage systems to capture surface water and prevent water entering the building.
This CPD presentation explores the key drainage design considerations for Livable Housing, focusing on how effective drainage solutions can be integrated into accessible bathroom design and external threshold conditions.
