Presenter/s

Marius Reinke & Ash Fechner

Overview

This presentation invites architects to re-evaluate the garage door as a considered architectural element rather than a functional afterthought, unlocking design opportunities comparable to those achieved through glazing and façade selection. It examines the full spectrum of bespoke garage door solutions and demonstrates how they can be seamlessly integrated into building design from the outset.
The session also addresses key specification considerations, including available materials and finishes, and explores the technical detailing required at the interface between the garage door system and the surrounding structure. The presentation concludes with a series of built examples, providing inspiration and illustrating the design potential that can be realised when bespoke garage doors are employed in place of standard solutions.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:

  • Understand the range of standard and premium garage door types
  • Evaluate design capabilities and identify appropriate solutions across a variety of door applications
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of key garage door metrics, including headroom and sideroom, and their application in practical design scenarios

This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects 2021

  • PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC18 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, research, emergent knowledge and critical evaluation in formulating and refining concept design options, including the exploration of three-dimensional form and spatial quality.
  • PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC25 Be able to draw on knowledge from the history and theory of architecture as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design.
  • DETAILED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
PC 39 Understand how the integration of material selection, structural and construction system impacts on design outcomes.
